Folding SOMA figures.
There are many ways to produce new figures.
One of the most popular is to just play with the pieces,
and then see if they fit in a nice way.
Another way, is to build a base figure, and then by folding
pieces in and out, sometimes rotating and folding, we can
produce several more interesting figures.
There is also a few examples in the Parker Brothers manual.
Now follow the descriptions below, and see how I
fold from one to the next.
Let's start from the cube.
 |
/SOMA-A-
/377/357/355
/217/366/445
/216/216/244 |
Then fold down left, lift and turn right top
 |
/SOMA-B-
/...11/...61/...57/33355
/...66/...67/...77/23445
/...../...../...../22244
|
to do -C-. swirl around right
 |
/SOMA-C-
/.117./.165./33355
/.677./.667./23445
/...../...../22244
|
Now Lets try a different figure.
First we rearrange the cubes in figure -C-
to get -D-
 |
/SOMA-D-
/.../.../333
/.66/.77/437
/.61/.67/445
/.11/.55/245
/.../.../222
|
From -D- to get -E-. Flip on end and turn he wings
 |
/SOMA-E-
/34../3376/3776
/.4../.466/.571
/22../2451/2551
|
From -D- to get -F-. Turn top and reposition
 |
/SOMA-F-
/..../333.
/.551/4351
/.571/4466
/.776/2476
/..../222.
|
From -D- to get -G-. Fold down
 |
/SOMA-G-
/...../333..
/...76/43776
/...66/44571
/...51/24551
/...../222..
|
Now we can continue from the -G- figure
to get -H-. Fold down
 |
/SOMA-H-
/....../333...
/...7../437766
/.....6/445716
/...5../245511
/....../222...
|
And from -H- to get -I-. Turn right block 180 deg and raise,
Flip middle, move left part on top.
 |
/SOMA-I-

/.4./731/771
/.4./541/766
/.2./546/556

Try it yourself, maybe you can find other figure
foldings that will take us through a wole sequence
of different figures, however, remember that each
folding step should be short and simple, and it
SHOULD consist of moving a solid section of
'more than one piece' at a time.
Happy figure hunting.
